Let’s face it, we demand a lot from our skin. Having access to high performance products and high-tech devices is fantastic but if we get carried away, and don’t work in some rest periods, skin can start rebelling.
With pretty much anything, too much can be not-so-great for us. Using too many skincare products too frequently and/or too enthusiastically can overwork your skin, aging it more, not less, and looking worse instead of better.
Remember, skin has a delicate lipid barrier that if distressed, microscopic damage can occur and lead to moisture loss, bacterial infection, and irritation.
Skin can get overly dry and sensitive and look red, dry, and blotchy with increased wrinkles when in an overworked condition. YIKES!
Take a realistic inventory at what you are doing. Are you using multiple actives at once, layering on products that compete, scrubbing too vigorously, microneedling too often? When was the last time you gave your skin some rest?
What Does Rest for the Skin Look Like?
A rest period for you might be a return to the basics for a few days. You’d still double cleanse, use one serum, one moisturizer, and an SPF in the morning, repeat in evening. However, use a moisturizer that is a little heavier as a night cream and of course you don't need SPF at night.
If not too severely overworked, choose a nourishing, soothing mask to help refresh it.
How many devices are you using? Lay off one or all of the devices (or limit to one using it for less time) to get in a rest. Don’t worry. You will not lose results over a couple of days if you've been using them for a while.
Oh, and if you have any prescribed treatments, you will want to ask your physician before skipping any days.
If you’re getting treatments like microdermabrasion, microneedling, fibroblast, etc., you might need to take a break here too. These kinds of treatments continue to work the skin many weeks following the treatment. If you keep overworking your skin, it may be counterproductive.
The goal in skincare is to get the skin back into the state of homeostasis where it feels soft, taut, clear and smooth. If you're working on restoring it, you still have to work in rest periods. Just like a physical trainer knows not to push a body non-stop, you too need to give your skin a break now and then.
So consider how long you’ve been doing your “treatments” and schedule in a mini vacation for your skin. It might be just what it needs to look and feel better.

Take a look at the six signs of unhealthy skin that appear even with a solid skin routine, along with the esthetician-trusted tips to fix them!
One of the most obvious signs of unhealthy skin is a dry, flaky complexion. You might not notice how dry your skin has become as you lather on your favorite moisturizer. But you can definitely tell your skin is in need of moisture after applying makeup like foundation or powder. If your skin peels and flakes by the end of the day, you’re most likely overdue for a good exfoliation session!
Exfoliation is the best way to gently loosen dead skin cells, accelerate skin renewal, and revive dry or flaky skin. I recommend washing with the deep cleaning, foamy CBE Botanicals Scrub Away the Day Cleanser, and following with the Revive Exfoliating Serum once or twice weekly. If your skin is sensitive or dry, try the Enzyme Rescue for a gentle but thorough exfoliation.
